Walton Athletics Club’s young throws specialist  Sawa Yamakawa fell three seconds short of South of England indoor pentathlon gold on Sunday.

The 15-year-old claimed a silver medal with a points score of 2463 at Lee Valley, having won three out of his five events.

Yamakawa, coached by Stompond Lane’s Terry Letheby, won the 60 metre hurdles, long jump and shot putt before leaping 1.60metres for tied second place in the high jump.

But his time of  two minutes 38.73 seconds in the 800m was adrift of the 3:55 mark that would have given him enough points to finish top of the pile.
