Banstead driver Matt Flowers is back behind the wheel and raring to go in the latest round of the GT5 Challenge G40 Championship this weekend.

The 24-year-old crashed out in March’s first round meeting at Oulton Park in dramatic fashion, but his Academy Motorsport team have rebuilt his Ford Zetec 1.81 engine car ready for the second round at Rockingham.

But such was the damage to his drive, Flowers and his team only got the car finished this week, and they needed help from Ginetta to get all the parts needed.

In fact, testing this weekend will mark the first time Flowers has got behind the wheel since the crash.

He said: “I am really up for this race, despite what happened last time round.

“It was not my fault, I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, so my confidence has not been knocked.

“I am just keen to get going again.”

Despite the setback, Flowers had a good start at Oulton, taking fifth in the first race – a fact he believes sets him up well this weekend.

He said: “It will not be easy having to test the car with such little time before the races.

“I guess if we’re off the pace fans will be thinking we’re just slow because we’re not that good, and I have little experience at this level to refute that.

“I am sure there will be technical issues that need ironing out, and we may need to find pace again, but we did well at Oulton and that stands us in good stead.

“Either way, we have no choice.”
