Hersham race ace Sam Bird has predicted a tight finish in the GP2 series this season.

The 26-year-old finished second and fourth in the latest two rounds in Monza on Saturday and today, to put himself within six points of drivers' championship leader Fabio Leimer.

There are four races remaining in the season and Bird, driving for Russian Time, is in the form of his life having enjoyed four race wins this season.

And the Mercedes AMG Petronas test driver, who secured a pole position in qualifying and notched a fastest lap on race day, reckons it will go down to the final race weekend at the Yas Marina circuit in the UAE.

"I'm a happy boy," he tweeted on Sunday.

"This will go down to the wire.

"I will give it everything I have.

"We can do this."

Russian Time are also in the hunt for the team championship title and Bird reckoned individual glory would take care of itself providing the team kept performing.

"It could go any possible direction," he said in Saturday's post-race press conference in Italy.

"For sure, we will be concentrating on the teams’ championship.

"I will be wanting to win the main championship, but in order to do that we have to continue to score points as a team, and I need to score big points as a driver."
