After the Christmas madness of the destruction derby, Spedeworth return to their domestic programme on Sunday at Plough Lane.

With the chaos of the Surrey Street Squad thundering around the Wimbledon Stadium on Boxing Day in their vans and coaches, our other drivers from south London will be keen to take the plaudits in two non-contact rod formulas, as they compete for their London championships.

First up are the rookie rods who have their re-arranged championship that was postponed from late November.

On the night, the racing was suspended after the unfortunate events in the V8 class stock cars where Peter Scott Junior had a bad accident and needed hospital treatment.

Carshalton’s Ted Symes will want to go well around his home track, to continue his great season to date in the entry level Rod formula, while Christopher Deeley from Croydon will also be keen to retain the title within the capital.

Meanwhile, the stock rods with their classic 1300cc engines, also race for their London championship.

Our local drivers will find it difficult to dislodge the experienced trio of Stuart Smyth, Andy Sturt and Tristan Jackson, but on the night with just a set of three races, anything can happen.

More optimistic of having a good evening will be the three drivers from Mitcham in round nine of the Refine Metals Bangers League.

Last time out on New Year’s Day, star driver Keith Conlon had a return to form with good finishes in the heats and then winning the day’s final.

Along with top 10 finishes from team mates Wayne Turner and James Simpson; all three are slowly making an impact at the right end of the table - Conlon in particular will be confident of another good showing.

The evening’s racing is completed by the all action contact formula of the 2l saloon stock cars.

Morden’s Jimmy Morris had an excellent outing around Plough Lane at the Boxing Day meeting where he finished the afternoon with a brace of heat wins, and then a third place in the final.

After winning the Midlands championship at the Northampton International Raceway recently, Colin Jones from Mitcham will also be one to watch as the ironed up bumpers go in firmly.

First race starts at 5:30pm.
