Howard's Full speed ahead for BTCC debut

Worcester Park race ace Howard Fuller may be in awe of the big names on the Brtish Touring Car Championship grid, but that will not stop him ruffling a few feathers.

The 20-year-old makes his BTCC debut at Rockingham this week after securing a one-off drive in a Team HARD Honda Civics this weekend.

Fuller has already tasted victory at the Northamptonshire circuit in the VW Cup in a Team HARD Golf GTi,  having cut his teeth in Formula Palmer Audi and Formula Renault BARC single-seaters.

And after getting to grips with an S2000-spec Touring car at Brands Hatch last week he is confident of a good showing.

“There are some huge names on the grid and it’s going to be fantastic being on the same grid as them,” he said.

“It really is the big time even though for now it’s just a one-off.

“Driving the Civic at Brands enabled me to appreciate just what a terrific bit of kit a modern day BTCC car is – it is on another
level. There’s a definite wow factor.

“It was shared sessions with other categories and that can get quite busy on-track, but we still managed to put in some decent laps.

“In the final session the team put the car into race trim and the times were comparable with the top five from earlier this year.”

Touring Car veteran Tom Onslow-Cole is also in action at Rockingham where the New Malden 25-year-old is playing down his chances of closing the gap on independent drivers’ championship leader Andrew Jordan.

“We’ve been improving the BMW all the time and it’d be nice to at least continue my current run of podiums,” added Onslow-Cole.

“I’ve had five in the last four meetings and I think there probably should have been more.

“I had a slow start to the season, which put me on the backfoot, but I’m catching up fast – although I’m not looking at any championship until one is an option.”
