Carshalton Athletic manager Tommy Williams has asked his relegation-threatened players a question – “If teams around us are losing points, why don’t we win them?”

Williams laid down the gauntlet after Nathaniel Pinney and Pelayo Pico Gomez had guided the Robins to a 3-1 win over Harrow Borough on Tuesday night.

The Robins remain bottom of the Ryman Premier Division table, but with nearest rivals Hastings United and Thurrock both losing on Tuesday night – although they both have five games in hand – a cruelly slim possibility of survival continues to dangle in front of Williams and his team.

They face a trip to play-off chasing Met Police on Saturday, before hosting Hampton & Richmond on Bank Holiday Monday – must win games for the manager.

He said: “Easter means we’re getting to the business end of the season and it is huge for us.

“The games come thick and fast, but if we come out of the Easter period with some results it will make it very interesting down the bottom.

“And I did say a long time ago that there will be twists and turns come the end of the season and I am hoping they come in our favour.”

He added: “The win over Harrow is a massive result for us and other results have gone our way.

“I’ve told the players, if the other sides don’t want to pick up points, why don’t we start picking up points.

“We did that against Harrow and I am hoping it will set us  up for a run between now and the end of the season. Who knows what will happen?”

The Robins rode their luck against Harrow on a night of Keystone Cop football.

After a lacklustre start, Carshalton were gifted a half-time lead when Harrow’s Michael Peacock clumsily converted Tyrell Miller-Rodney’s cross from almost on the goal-line.

Pico Gomez doubled the Robins advantage before Harrow halved the deficit direct from a corner. The visitors contrived to miss an open goal to equalise before Pinney sealed the win.

Williams said: “We started flat and did not play as well as we did on Saturday when we lost. But football is funny like that.

“We’ve done some tinkering – we’ve had Ola Sogbanmu in central defence for a couple of games and he has done very well.

“Him, Ricardo (Joseph) and Adriano (Moraes) as a threesome of central defenders have looked comfortable and gelled well together.

“James [Ashton] has had a few injury problems in his career but we’ve been lucky enough to get him here. He’s enjoying his football and lucky enough he is enjoying playing for us.”

He added: “I also thought Pico Gomez was excellent – his hold up play was tremendous and he held the front line superbly, really bringing other players in around him.”
