Whyteleafe’s winning streak continued with a 2-0 win over a Greenwich Borough side that now props up the Southern Counties East Football League table.

It was Leafe’s fifth consecutive victory, fourth with a clean sheet, but there is cause for concern as John Fowler’s squad has picked up a series of injuries in the past few weeks.

Both key central midfielders Jensen Grant and Jason Thompson have sustained injuries, Gareth Williams’ hamstring continues to concern and goalkeeper Sheikh Ceesay took a knock on Saturday, which saw him hobble about for much of it.

The injury came early in the match with a clumsy challenge from a Greenwich forwards in the ninth minute, and the match was held up for several minutes as the former Dulwich Hamlet and Walton & Hersham keeper received treatment.

Greenwich were certainly taking the game to Whyteleafe early in this match and a powerful 25-yard drive from Bada Mohamed forced Ceesay to parry the ball away in spectacular fashion on 14 minutes.

Whyteleafe’s best chance in the opening stages came when Taylor Smith broke down the right, turned a defender inside the box and squared the ball into the danger area where Ryan Fowler shot inches wide.

Roscoe DSane had a cracking run and shot which the Greenwich keeper Jon Beal managed to tip just over the bar, and shortly afterwards it was Ceesay at the other end who was forced to make his second spectacular save tipping over a powerful header from Scott Hillyard.

Smith and DSane both had efforts go close but the breakthrough only came after some more clumsy defending by the visitors on the hour.

DSane was upended in the box when still wide of the goal and the referee blew the whistle for a penalty.

Bentley Graham stepped up to take the kick and Beale did extremely well to block the shot that was going into the corner - however, DSane was the quickest to react and cleanly shot the rebound past Beale and into the net.

Dsane should have doubled the lead three minutes later when after controlling the ball brilliantly in the box he only needed to lift it over a stranded keeper but his effort was too weak and it landed straight in Beale’s hands.

The match was effectively won on 75 minutes when, once again the pace and trickery of Dsane forced yet another poorly timed tackle from the Greenwich defence.

This time Graham struck his penalty with much more ferocity and Beale could get nowhere near it.

The remaining 15 minutes were not particularly convincing from Leafe and they allowed the visitors to attack Ceesay’s goal and create several good chances of their own.

However, there was to  be no break through and Whyteleafe, now fourth in the table, go to Sevenoaks on Tuesday night ahead of the FA Cup first round qualifying visit of Horley Town on Saturday.
