Leatherhead booked their place in the FA Cup second qualifying round with a 2-1 win over Ryman Premier visitors Carshalton Athletic on Saturday.

Tanners fell behind to a goal scored midway through the first half but they bounced back with an equaliser from Tom Bradbrook, before Adam Burchell stabbed home a second half winner.

The visitors dominated the opening half hour with their quickfire interplay as they pushed forward.

Pelayo Pico Gomez, Luke Pigden and Mark Goodman all had shots just wide of the goal before Leatherhead could settle.

Robins took the lead from a corner after 23 minutes - the ball was nodded down by Harold Adametey and hit home by Steve Butterworth from close range.

The goal was met by a positive response from Leatherhead as Matt Smart launched a probing free kick into the Carshalton box and defender Paris Hamilton Downes deflecting the ball onto the bar.

Tanners sensed a nervous defence and two minutes later another Smart free kick was met by an exquisite header from Bradbrook for the hosts to draw level.

Leatherhead took the upper hand in the second half - Bradbrook sent a looping ball across the width of the visitors’ goalmouth, Kev Terry drove it back into the middle of the area where Allan Tait fired just wide of the post.

Kingsley Alkionbare had a chance to put the visitors back into the lead after 67 minutes but the Robins sub was beaten to a loose ball in front of goal by Tanners keeper Deren Ibrahim.

Leatherhead’s winner came after 77 minutes as Robins’ failed to deal with another of Smart’s corners.

Tait met the ball cleanly but Robins’ goalkeeper Dean Snedker spilled his shot at the feet of Burchell for a simple tap in.

Carshalton’s miserable afternoon was completed when captain Adriano Moraes was sent off in the last minute following a lunging tackle on Leatherhead’s Elie Kayembe.

Robins can now concentrate on their precarious position near the foot of the Ryman Premier while Tanners start preparing for the next round's trip to Binfield on September 28.
