Kingstonian boss Alan Dowson’s re-invention as a 21st century text pest means Ks will be fit to challenge for Ryman League Premier Division title, reckons John Coke.

The 27-year-old defender - and his team mates - have been bombarded with mobile phone messages from the Kingsmeadow chief as he keeps close tabs on his men’s summer movements.

It has prompted many to keep in shape before returning to pre-season training this week and Coke admits he and his girlfriend are relieved to see the back of his manager’s off-season surveillance.

“It is nice to be back if only to see the back of Alan’s texts. My girlfriend thinks I’m having an affair I’ve had so many and its been the same with the rest of the lads,” he said.

“The good thing is that it means - probably for the first time since I’ve been here - players have been bothered to look after themselves during the summer and put in the extra work. That is a rarity at non-League level.

“Alan prides himself on having the fittest team in the league and players don’t want that letting them down when it comes to getting a place in the team.”

Former Staines Town man Lewis Cook and Ashford Town goalkeeper Josh Willis - seen around the club this week - are among those hoping to be part of Dowson’s plans for the coming campaign.

Coke believes the new faces and the winning feeling left over from last season’s romp to the Ryman League Division One South title should help his team to compete at the right end of the table.

“There is no suggestion of complacency. Once you are winning it becomes a habit and you just want to taste that success even more,” he added.

“Everyone knows it is going to be hard next season and there is going to be real competition for places.

“There is no point starting league without thinking you can win it and that is what we are going out to do. Everyone has comeback with a competitive attitude and the battle for places is going to be interesting.”

Ks will face fierce rivals Sutton next season and Coke admits it is the clash that captures the imagination most.

“I’ve always heard about the hatred the fans have for each other, but have never had the chance to sample it first hand. The fans will make it a special occasion, which makes that match stand out in a pretty open league,” he said.

Ks have drawn Bognor Regis in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup on September 12.
