Fifth-placed Weston-Super-Mare came to the Beveree seeking to extend their away run, but a sparkling display from the Beavers sent them home with no points and a 20 minute post match harangue by manager Craig Laird ringing in their ears.

For a lot of the time it was difficult to tell who was bottom of the league and who were in the playoff spots, as the Beavers sought to ensure today's result didn't create a new club record for the worst start to a season, nine games before a victory set in 1984-85.

For most of the first half hour, the Beavers were comfortably in charge with Jamie Simmonds involved in most of the good work.

An early corner found Nathan Collier at the back post but his header just cleared the bar and didn't trouble keeper Lloyd Irish.

After further Hampton pressure, WSM broke away on 21 minutes and gained a free kick just outside the box after a Callum Stewart challenge, but Rodney Chiweshe was equal to it and saved easily.

The Beavers by now were looking comfortable on the ball, and with the midfield set in a diamond formation, Tom Hickey protecting the back four and Jamie Simmonds sat 'in the hole' behind Thompson and Duff, the team was in no real danger.

They got their just rewards as Lewis Ferrell made ground down the right, his resulting cross was handled by Weston's Kane Ingram and the well positioned referee had no hesitation in awarding a spot kick.

Jamie Simmonds stepped up and fired the ball to the keeper's right and into the back of the net.

The midfield was looking solid, with Nathan Collier making threatening runs at the Weston defence, which although not panicking, looked a little uncertain at times. Nathan created two chances for Stuart Duff, just after the goal, but he was unable to convert them; a volley was struck wide then a goal bound shot was easily saved by Irish.

Just before the break, Dan Thompson and Weston skipper Matt Villis had a sickening clash of heads, and after treatment lasting some minutes, Thompson was substituted and later taken to hospital for a precautionary examination.

Villis did return to the field, but he looked as if he barely knew where he was and was subsequently withdrawn at half time.

The second half opened with the Beavers continuing where they left off, and the lead was doubled on 50 minutes.

Dave Tarpey won the ball off Ingram in midfield and hared off towards goal, he reached the edge of the box and fired a shot/chip past Irish, who could only get the weakest of hand to the ball before it hit the back of the net. The crowd of 491 erupted as the team celebrated.

The difference now in the team was becoming apparent, as they visibly grew in assurance and in confidence.

ten minutes later, the lead was extended to three as Simmonds made a 30 yard run towards goal, beat two defenders and dummied the keeper to the far post as he buried it at the near.

Weston's Sahr Kabba was causing Matt Ruby and Dean Inman problems with his pace and trickery and he finally managed to break through on goal.

However his shot wasn't quite accurate enough, it rebounded off the post and into the arms of a beaten Rodney Chiweshe, who was no doubt grateful to clutch the ball to him.

With just 10 minutes to go, the Beavers fashioned another opening; Lewis Ferrell and Dave Tarpey combined down the right, the cross was met by an unmarked Jacob Erskine and headed into the net, but he'd drifted offside and the goal was chalked off.

Weston hadn't really challenged Rodney Chiweshe much but on 84 minutes, he had to be alert as Huxley evaded the offside trap and connected with a header into the box, which he had to tip wide for a corner, which came to nothing.

The Beavers hadn't yet finished, as Paul Johnson, having a fairly quiet game compared to his midfield colleagues, found Tarpey, who beat two defenders to create room for a shot, but the powerful strike was straight at Irish.

Out of the blue, with pretty much the last kick of the match, Weston's Dayle Grubb managed to divert the ball past Chiweshe for Weston's consolation but in some respects it was more than they deserved.
