Carshalton progressed further in another cup competition after seeing off a spirited Whyteleafe team on Tuesday night, writes James Barrett.

A single goal from in-form striker Paul Vines was enough to beat their hosts, but a professional display was in order to ensure they remained in the Surrey Senior Cup.

Manager Paul Dipre gave some of the club’s talented youngsters a taste of first team action, as goalkeeper Luke Badialli and midfielder Ryan Laflin made their season debuts.

Billy Crook, Michael Kamara, Dean Lodge, Sonny Ayres and Kennedy Adjei were all recalled to the starting line-up and the bench also featured youngsters Daryl Hay, Josh Turner and Tommy Bradford.

The pitch had been hit hard by rain during the day and contained some sand-covered pot holes, which made passing a dangerous method of play for both sides.

After a goalless first half, the only goal of the game came on 50 minutes.

Ayres laid the ball off to Dean Lodge, who drew out his marker and played in Luke Nolan who broke from left back. It looked like he had pushed the ball out of play, but he managed to pull it back to an unmarked Vines who thumped it into the back of the net. It was the striker’s fifth goal in three games.

And Badialli made two good saves late on to deny Whyteleafe a replay and set up a quarter-final tie against Metropolitan Police at Colston Avenue in late February.

“Looking at the squad gave me great satisfaction,” said Dipre.

“Eight players were home grown through the development structure we put in place three years ago, and there are many more to come.

“Some lads are more ready than others, but the conveyor belt we dreamed of not so long ago is in place and actually delivering results. The future looks bright.”
