Carshalton Athletic reprise their role as David in the FA Trophy this Saturday and their captain sees no reason why they cannot slay Goliath again.

The Robins travel to Blue Square Premier strugglers Newport County in the third round, looking to repeat their giant killing of Lincoln City in the last round and secure a quarter-final spot.

Carshalton and Wealdstone are the only Ryman Premier sides left in the competition at this stage and skipper David Ray, who is in his third season at the club, is confident their 3-1 replay success over the Imps could lead to bigger things.

“It is a big game for the club this Saturday and we are all looking forward to it, the lads are buzzing,” he said.

“With the successes against Lincoln and Bishop’s Stortford in the earlier rounds, the boys are full of confidence, we know we earned the right to face Newport County.

“For the sake of the cliche, football is a funny old game and cups are funny competitions where teams from lower divisions often triumph against teams from higher leagues.

“We will go there again with little pressure and try to enjoy it, whereas they will be expected to come through it.

“The successful run we have had this season has created a stir around the club and as soon as you mention the FA Trophy and the Newport game it creates a bit of a spark.

“We are one win from the quarter-finals which, for a team from our step, is a great achievement.”

The Robins go into the game on the back of their first League victory in eight matches having beaten Margate 2-1 last weekend thanks to late goals from Paul Vines and Tom Davis.

Vines has scored six goals in his last four games and will be key to success on Saturday.

“Paul Vines’ scoring record in the Ryman Premier League has been proven for years,” added Ray.

“Against Lincoln he proved he can score against teams from higher leagues and I cannot actually remember the last time he didn’t score.”
