Great Britain rower Ruth Walczak hopes to emulate her team-mates’ success in last year’s Olympic Games in the Rowing World Cup later this month.

Walczak, 25, who rows at the Molesey Boat Club, is in her first season with the GB team and finished a respectable fourth in the first regatta of the World Cup in Sydney and hopes to push for a medal at Eton Dorney later this month.

She races in a single scull and feels the step up into the senior GB side has been a real eye opener.

“It’s been a big step up with the intensity levels, but I’m looking forward to seeing what I can do after all the hard work," she said.

“It’s my first year so I’ve got nothing to lose, so I’m just looking to see how I get on against the best in the world.”

She’s been a member at Molesey for five years and thinks the family element of the club has helped her progress to this stage.

“Everyone in the club is so supportive; it’s like a big family with people of all ages and all abilities rowing," she added.

"They always look after the best interest of each athlete and are always checking how we’re getting on.

“It’s great to get to the chance to compete at Dorney so soon after the world cup and it means everyone from the club can come down to watch.”

For Ruth though, the family factor at Molesey is as strong as blood, her twin sister rows there, too.

“It’s great to go back down and see everyone, including my sister, and I’m still very much connected with everyone down there," she said.

Her big challenge now is earning a World Cup medal at Eton Dorney on June 21 to 23, and progressing toward the World Rowing Championships, which begin in August in South Korea.
