Croydon Harrier Omar Reid struck silver in the discus at the English Schools track & field championships in Birmingham on Friday, just 24 hours before his 17th birthday, writes Matthew Kiernan.

The Surrey U20 champion threw a new lifetime best with the 1.75kg disc of 49.84m to finish runner-up in the field of 20.

Two more Harriers made track finals, with sprinters Ashleigh Clarke (inter girl’s 200m) and Damien Powell (senior boy’s 100m) finished seventh and eighth respectively.

Clarke went onto help the Surrey 4x100m team win gold, while Powell assisted the county’s senior boys to seventh in their sprint relay final.

In the inter boy’s shot put, David Olajiga finished tenth in 13.03m, while Ricardo King clocked 51.29 in the inter boy’s 400m.

Meanwhile, their club colleagues in the female young athletes squad booked their place in the Lily B girl’s league main final with an impressive win at Guildford on Saturday.

At the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games, the girls' 4x100m team of Sonyce Archer, Lauryn John-Greenwood, Chanice Gordon and Coralie Mido won the team silver medal in 50.6.

Archer added to her silver by earning bronze in the long jump with a lifetime best of 4.90m. Other finalists included Gordon (girls' 200m, 4th), Mido (girls' shot put, 8th), Kieron Connor (boys' 800m, 5th) and Chuks Ajeh (boys' 100m, 8th).

The girls' team finished ninth overall, and the boys' 20th, with 33 London Boroughs competing in both competitions. The Borough of Croydon as a whole finished runner’s up in the Jubilee Trophy after the completion of all 28 sports.

In ParkRun action, Alan Burn won at Lloyd Park for the second week running in 17:58.
