Herne Hill Harrier Lukas Wieland finished eight in the javelin final at the European Junior championships in Italy on Saturday.

Competing for Switzerland, the 18-year-old qualified for the final in 11th place from a field of 26 with a best of 70.34m with his final throw.

He couldn't match the distance in the final though, throwing a best of 69.68 in the second round to end in eighth.

Elsewhere, Michelle Watson claimed a sprint double for Harriers on Saturday, winning the 100m and 200m in the latest round of the Southern Women's League.

Team captain Bryony Phillips was also a double winner in the shot and javelin, but the performances of Phillips and Watson were not enough to prevent the Channel Islands taking overall victory in the match.

Harriers will nonetheless take heart from a strong team showing, with U17 athlete Francesca Reid-Lloyd's second place runs in the 800m and 1500m an illustration of the club's burgeoning talent.

Another female athlete in good weekend form was Katie Snowden, who won her 800m race at a windy BMC meeting at the Iffley Road track in Oxford. Her 2:05.52 was impressive in the conditions and her fastest time for two years, and close to her own club women's record of 2:05.26.

Lewis Lloyd was also in action at Iffley Road, winning his race with a strong kick finish in 1:53.13, a time close to his personal best set at Eltham a few days earlier. Meanwhile, 12-year-old Katy-Ann McDonald ran 2:12.01, placing seventh in one of the women's 800m races.

In the SIAL Schools International meeting in Dublin, Fawaaz Okunola represented England Schools and won his 100m race in 10.95 against a -2.1 m/s headwind, while he was also part of the England sprint relay team that broke the meeting record in winning in 41.72.

On the road, Mike Boyle was first V50 at the Elmbridge 10k, finishing 13th overall in 35:00, two places and seven seconds behind leading Harrier Basil Wallace. Inga Bellahn was Herne Hill's first female, clocking a personal best 46:22 in 183rd.

The pick of the Harriers athletes at the National Lottery Anniversary Run was Robert Edwards, posting 28:34 to finish 40th in the five-mile race.
