Herne Hill Harriers'  athletes Saskia Millard and Fawwaz Okunola struck gold at the Southern Counties U15 and U17 Championships at the weekend, with five club-mates also claiming medals.

Millard won the U15 girls' 800m race in two minutes, 16.40 seconds, while Okunola was victorious in the U17 men's 100m in 11.09.

Feysel Nadew almost joined them on the top step but had to settle for silver in the U15 boys' 800m in 2:00.56 despite clocking the same time as the winner.

There were bronze medals for Frederick Afrifa in the U17 men's 200m in 22.54, Dejean Marshall-Brown in the U15 boys' shot with a 10.65m throw, Catriona McSorley in the U15 girls' 75m hurdles in 11.00 and Ade Adeniran in the U15 boys' 200m in 24.59.

Adeniran was also fourth in the U15 boy's hurdles final, matching the finishing positions of Ismail Abdul-Karim in the U17 men's 100m and Denisha Marshall-Brown in the U15 girl's shot. Ed Olsen was another athlete to finish in fourth in his U17 men's 800m final.

The times set over the weekend were generally affected by a head wind in the home straight.

Penelope Cummings took part in a senior women's 5000m walk at the same venue, finishing in third place with a time of 31:06.72.

Elsewhere, Katie Snowden's late-season track and field form continued as she finished second in the women's 800m A race at the final BMC Grand Prix meeting of the season at Manchester.

Racing in diabolic conditions, Snowden missed out on the line by two hundredths of a second in a time of 2:05.53, one hundredth of a second outside her season's best - set at a BMC meeting in Oxford - which she had equalled three days previously at Eltham.

Snowden was beaten in Manchester by national senior bronze medallist Shelayna Oskan-Clarke, who has clocked 2:03 more than once this summer and behind whom Snowden had also finished second at Eltham.

Geoff Jerwood, Snowden's coach, said: "The finish at Manchester was much, much closer and frustratingly Katie's time is worth much better than the rankings will show."

Mike Cummings was also in action at Manchester where he finished third in his 1500m race, posting a season's best time of 3:57.18. Running in the 800m, Michael Dyer was fourth in 1:53.83.

Away from the track, James Fooks-Bale was 20th at the 14-mile Race the Train at Talylln to finish in 1.30:20. Team-mate Rupert Mainwaring also made the journey to mid-Wales, finishing 175th in 1.46:59.

On the road, there was a Herne Hill one-two at the Brockwell parkrun with Mohammed Ismail (first in 17:19) holding off the challenge of Robert Edwards (second in 17:39).

Herne Hill Harriers are hosting the Surrey County 10,000m Track Championship on Saturday at the club's Tooting Bec headquarters as part of an open meeting of track and field events.
