Croydon Harriers' men’s bid to qualify for the British Athletics League ended in a fifth place finish in Abingdon at the annual qualifying fixture.

With the top two clubs on the day to be promoted, and a competitive field, Croydon acquitted themselves well and the result represents an improvement of two places from seventh, lasy year.

Paul Ogun provided the highlights of the day with a double win in the long and triple jump. The long jump specialist enjoyed a season’s best performance of 7.26m and 14.76m in the triple jump.

It ranks him 38th and 32nd in the UK in his respective events.

English Schools discus silver medallist Omar Reid also triumphed in the discus with a throw of 43.28m to rank him seventh best U20 in the UK with the 2K implement.

Richmond Baah was also a solid runner-up in the javelin with a throw of 47.66m.

In masters action, Mandy Rowley-Jones scooped gold at the British Masters championships in Birmingham. The former Welsh junior international leapt to a season’s best of 9.09m.

At the Surrey Road Relays, Croydon’s M40 team finished fourth, three places higher than they managed 12 months ago.

Over the three-mile circuits, Neil Aikman (17 minutes, 42 seconds) handed over to Alan Burn (16:32) who ran the seventh fastest M40 time of the day, before Andy Del Nevo (18:50) and Colin Oxlade (19:19) brought the team home 78 seconds short of bronze but ahead of six other quartets.

Aikman, Burn and Oxlade then rallied to run another 5km leg in the senior team, joining Brendan Murphy (15:48, 36th overall), David Brown (16:27, 59th) and David Chambers (16:59, 73rd) to ensure the team finished 15th their best result in this competition in two years.

In more road action, Alex Penfold was 106th at the Bristol half marathon in a field of more than 10,000 competitors. His time of one hour, 20 minutes, five seconds, ranks him 22nd in the U20 men’s age group over the distance.

In parkrun action, Jake English won the Burgess Hill event in 17:07.

In international action, James Dasaolu won the Great North City Games 100m in Gateshead, crossing the line in 10.17secs and took the scalps of Dwain Chambers, Ryan Bailey and Harry Akines-Aryeetey.
