Kingston & Polytechnic athlete Humphrey Waddington helped Cambridge end a record-breaking nine consecutive wins by Oxford in the annual varsity athletics match at Wilberforce Road, Cambridge, on Saturday.

Ten days short of his 20th birthday, the second-year geography student, who won the Eastern Counties indoor long and triple jump titles at Chelmsford in February, played a crucial part in an overwhelming Cambridge victory.

He won the triple jump with a lifetime best 13.95m and was second in the long jump with a season's-best 6.49m. He was also fourth in the javelin (40.34m).

Waddington, a former U15 speedbounce champion, helped Cambridge amass 130 points to Oxford's 82 - the biggest win in the series' 40-year history.

Jonathan Blackledge of Belgrave was on the losing side despite winning the 1500m (3:58.23).

Ranelagh Harriers sisters Alice and Anair Bevely, competing for Oxford, were on the losing side in the second-team match.

Alice won the 2000m steeplechase with Anair third.

They reversed positions in the 400m hurdles, while Anair was also joint second in the high jump and fourth in the 100m hurdles.
