More than 400 young athletes had the chance to meet England rugby legend Steve Thompson when they competed at the Epsom College Superteams competition last Sunday.

World Cup winner Tommo presented prizes at the 30th anniversary of the annual event which included swimming, basketball, gym tests, steeplechase and team relays.

He said: "I was most impressed with the standard of competition and the facilities provided by Epsom College. It was especially encouraging to see so many youngsters attempting such a variety of sports and taking part with such enjoyment."

The boys' U9 competition was won by Milbourne Lodge from Claygate, while Yateley Manor from Hampshire triumphed in the girls' event. In the U11 category, Cobham school Parkside took the boys' title, with Danes Hill School from Oxshot winning the girls' event. The U13 boys' trophy went to Milbourne Lodge and the girls' trophy to Feltonfleet, Cobham.

The overall winner of the boys' competition was Parkside, while Danes Hill won the girls' event. St Andrew's from Woking took the Small Schools' Shield for the fourth year running.

Thompson, forced to retire earlier this year by a serious neck injury, will return to grassroots rugby this summer following the launch of the Steve Thompson Academies. Boys and girls aged seven to 16 will be able to receive coaching from Steve and his team at different venues around the country.

Sutton & Epsom RFC will be hosting one of the first academy sessions at Rugby Lane from July 30-August 1. Further details are available from rugby-matters.com.
