Merton topped their group in the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games Badminton qualifiers and will be one of eight boroughs fighting it out to be champions.

The qualifiers were held at the Sobell Leisure centre in Islington last Saturday when more than 300 young badminton players from 31 boroughs took part.

Merton’s mixed team of Jessica Swinburne, Emily Giles, Emily McKie, Emma Eastcott, Philippa Sinclair, Ryan Acquah, Raul Siva, Thomas Saunders, Toby Harland and Eddie Lee qualified from a group containing Brent, City of London and Croydon.

Team manager Steve Acquah said: “The competition has gone well so far and we are going to give our best to win this fantastic competition.”

Player Raul Siva added: “We had a lot of fun and I was really impressed by the quality of the opposition. It’ll be hard in the next round but we’re confident.”

Merton will be in a group with Sutton, Barnet and Enfield in the Super 8s and will have strong hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals.
