Streatham travelled up the A1 on Saturday with a full strength squad to face Peterborough Islanders.

They got off to the best possible start with only 13 seconds gone in the game. The Islanders defence failed to clear the puck and Peter Molnar took advantage by placing his wrist shot in the bottom left corner.

Streatham then killed a 5 on 3 Islanders powerplay as the home side struggled to get any rhythym going. Roman Culik then punished the Islanders sloppyness as his slap shot from the red line squeezed past goalie Simon Wren to double Streatham’s lead.

Streatham were now in full control and after more pressure they scored a third. Gennadi Yufit’s hard skating created space for him to shoot, and then the rebound fell nicely for Perry Richardson who made no mistake.

Richardson then had to sit a ten minute misconduct penalty after the referee adjudged his visor to be illegal.

With five minutes remaining the home side carved out their first real chance as player coach Ross Mackintosh beat Sanderson in the Redskins goal but could only watch in horror as his shot bounced off the cross bar.

From the clearance , Peter Molnar skated across the slot but his wrist shot bounced back off the post to safety. With ten seconds remaining in the period, Molnar found Lockwood but the youngster was denied by a great glove save from Wren.

The second period started poorly as both sides struggled to get any flow going. A long pass from Richard Hardy found Kent Johnson but the new signing could not get any power on his shot. The same two players combined again but Johnson was denied by Wren and then could not finish the rebound.

Peterborough pulled a goal back, as a point shot from Kieran D’Eath was tipped towards goal by Steve Maile and he finshed his own rebound from Sandersons save.

Tempers began to flair as Molnar and Maile exchanged words only for the referee Ian Hayden to send the innocent Russell Stevens to the penalty box.

On the subsequent 4 on 4 , Hardy and Culik combined but found Wren in good form. Lockwood created another chance for himself as he skated through three Islanders player but couldn’t score.

The referee was beginning to baffle both sides and he then gave Culik a two minute holding penalty after a hip check.

Mackintosh then cynically brought Stevens down to the floor after the Streatham man knocked the puck past him. Caz Britton and Liam Rasmussen then both squared up to the Islanders players as the game threatened to descend into violence.

Streatham finally got their fourth goal to give them a much needed cushion. The puck was fired towards goal by Britton and Hardy managed to steer the puck into the net despite being off balance under pressure from the Islanders defence.

With two minutes remaining in the period, the puck came to captain Ed Koral on the blue line and his slapshot flew through the crowd of players into the net. It was his first goal of the season and he celebrated in front of the travelling support.

From the face off, Tierney clattered Kent Johnson which prompted Hardy to exact revenge by going after the Peterborough forward. Hardy was given two minutes in the box for his troubles.

The third period started with the home side in no mood for pleasantries as they began to turn physical.

Streatham refused to fall for the bait and Josh Allam threaded a pass through to Yufit but he could not score past Wren on the one on one. Molnar then glided down the left wing and his pass was diverted into the path of Koral whose first time shot sailed wide of goal.

Peterborough player coach Mackintosh then lost the plot in front of Streatham’s net as he two handed Josh Allam ad broke the Streatham defensemans stick clean in half.

On the powerplay Johnson skated past two Islanders players before playing the puck back to Owen Murphy whose first time slapshot ripped into the net to make it 6-1.

Peterborough followed their coach’s example and began to slowly revert to dirty tactics. Leon Groom butt ended Richardson in the face and then Islanders captain Jon Brammall decided he would jump on Richard Hardy but the Redskin covered up. Whilst Groom’s indiscretion went unpunished, Brammall was kicked out of the game by the referee.

With five minutes remaining, Johnson sealed his man of match display as he skated out of the corner before spinning past an Islanders defenceman and then slotting past Wren to make it 7-1.

The rest of the game fizzled out as the Redskins sealed a fantastic win on the road.
