Nick ‘The Ox’ Okoth missed out on Prizefighter glory last Friday evening at York Hall, Bethnal Green when he was beaten in the final by surprise winner Jon-Lewis Dickinson.
The 36-year-old Battersea fireman entered the competition at the semi-final stage to replace red-hot favourite and former WBO world heavyweight champion Herbie Hide who was forced to pull out after suffering a nasty cut during his points win over Wayne Brooks.
He claimed a stunning points scalp over Belfast’s former Commonwealth champion Darren Corbett but was outclassed and knocked out in the third and final round by Durham-based Dickinson.
Earlier in the evening 2007 ABA champion Dickinson, 24, overcame fellow cruiserweights Streatham’s Leon Williams and former British title challenger from Chesterfield Mark Krence before beating Okoth to claim the £32,000 first prize.
Despite the defeat, it proved a worthwhile but lucrative evening for Okoth.
He left the famous old East London venue earning a cool £16,000 from his two fights, having come into Barry Hearn’s popular one-night boxing competition on the back of only eight wins in 41 outings. As Arthur Daley from classic television series Minder would always say, this was “a nice little earner”!
