Beddington boxer Charlie Edwards father claims he has photographic evidence his son should have been awarded a place in the Youth World Boxing Championships quarter-finals in Azerbaijan last week.

The 17-year-old crashed out to Australian Jackson Woods when judges - including a New Zealander - awarded the contest to his rival with the scores locked at 2-2.

The Beacon High School sixth former had beaten Kenyan Morris Ochieng (15-5) and the Kyrgyz Republic’s Nurbek Ablazov (15-4) in the previous two rounds to reach the last 16 of the 48kg category and be his country’s best performing youngster.

And Larry Edwards believes his son - the England team captain - was robbed of a chance to go even further.

“An English fighter cannot have anyone from Wales, Scotland or Ireland judging his fight, yet there was someone from New Zealand scoring this one,” he said.

“The scoring was unbelievable considering his previous fights. I’ve got photographs showing he won 7-6 fair and square.

“After they couldn’t split the scores an independent adjudicator couldn’t decide either, so they simply left it to the judges to decide and all three went against him.”
