Sutton’s James Hancock won the boys 11-12 race at the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games Lord Mayor’s Mile on Saturday. The event was a precursor to the annual Lord Mayor’s Parade, one of the world’s oldest and biggest annual processions.
The race covers a mile route in the heart of the city’s financial district in front of the Lord Mayor, various other dignitaries and thousands of spectators. Hancock, who attends Overton Grange School covered the distance in 5 minutes 21 seconds.
James Hancock: “There was one guy just two metres ahead of me and I caught him right on the line. I was trying to follow the leader and then try to win it. I’m good at sprint finishes.
”I go to Sutton and District AC, I do a lot of track races, 800m is my best event. I like Mo Farah, he’s my inspiration. Tom Holden won last year for Sutton, so it was good for the borough to win it again.”
