Ugandan athlete Pascar Owor successfully defended his Perseverance Wimbledon Dash 5km road race title at Wimbledon on Sunday.

The Belgrave Harrier was pushed all the way by Hercules Wimbledon’s Andrew Penney before striding away to win by 13 seconds in 15 minutes, 42 seconds and also claim the Surrey Championship title, which was incorporated into the race.

It was a remarkable performance given that he raced in the 800m and 1,500m in the British Athletics League in Gateshead less than 24 hours earlier.

Penney’s second place was equally impressive as it was his first ever 5km road race and his time of 13:55 was the seventh best by a Hercules Wimbledon athlete in history.

It was a perfect way to celebrate his birthday, having turned 20 on Saturday.

Thames Hare & Hounds athlete Nick Altmann took third in 16:09.

Second Hercules Wimbledon finisher was Alexie Calvert-Ansari, who was 29th in 17:33, with Pat Wright 39th in 18:07 and Alex Urban 41st in 18:12.

Claire Grima just missed out on a medal in the women’s championship where she finished fourth in 18:32, Hannah Fernando was eighth in 20:27.
