Bryony Shaw might have just bagged bronze on Olympic waters, but it is just the start of the Wandsworth windsurfer’s London 2012 adventure, writes Ben Baker.

The 28-year-old was in fine form at last week’s Weymouth and Portland International Regatta, which doubled up as the Olympic Games test event.

And after a consistent fleet race, she headed into Thursday’s medal race in third place, finishing ahead of French rival Charline Picon.

But she isn’t about to pop the champagne corks just yet, vowing to prove she is in better shape than when she collected bronze at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

“I finished up with a bronze medal so ultimately I am really happy,” she said.

“But now I will look back on the event, do the video analyses, talk to my coach and make a plan for next year because while bronze is a solid result and shows I am on track, ultimately the goal is still gold at London 2012 and I will be looking to see what can be improved.

“It is a tough job to win a medal in Weymouth because you need to be a good all-round sailor and I definitely feel like I am a better windsurfer than I was in Beijing.

“Back then I was very much a light-wind specialist but now I can say I am up there in all sorts of conditions so I feel like I am on track.”
