Teenage racer Oliver Fitz-Patrick could be on the cusp of something special in the world of motorbike racing, writes Hamish Mackay.

The 16-year-old has impressed this year in the MRO Bemsee Superteens championships, where he sits third in the overall standings, despite missing the first round, with the final round coming at Brands Hatch this weekend.

He has applied to race in the Red Bull Moto GP Rookies Cup next year, when he will also be riding a Honda RS 125cc in the British Super Bikes - which race all over Great Britain and is televised on Eurosport.

“There are always bigger and faster bikes to ride and I’m ready to step up," said the ambitious youngster from Wallington, who has been racing mini-motos since he was 11.

"It’s really competitive but I’m just focused on moving higher.

“The selection events for the Rookies Cup are coming up soon so hopefully I’ll get chosen and if you win the Red Bull 125cc then all eyes are on you, it’s a huge opportunity.”

Fitz-Patrick claimed two second-places and two third-places at the latest round of the Superteens at Snetterton on his Aprilla RS 125 bike earlier this month to move level on points with Luke Harris and leapfrog him in the table.

He would need a miraculous set of results at Brands Hatch to overhaul Jordan Gilbert and Max Symonds for the top two places but Fitz-Patrick, who has four race wins to his name, is delighted with how the season has gone.

“I’m really pleased," he said.

"In my first round I got pole on the qualifying and won the race and I have just kept progressing through the rounds.

"I thought I might struggle a little bit with the size of the bike but it hasn’t been a problem and I’m doing really well.”
