Charlie Edwards' hopes of glory at the World Amateur Boxing Championships have been dashed after a first round defeat.

The 18-year-old from Croydon lost 17-15 on points to Argentinian Junior Zarate in his opening match in Azerbaijan this morning.

The defeat means he will have to wait to secure qualification for next year's Olympics as he needed to make the quarter finals to guarantee it.

Edwards and Zarate both scored five points in each of the opening two rounds - but Zarate registered seven compared to Edwards' five in the third round to claim victory.

Edwards' coach and father Larry Edwards said: "The coaches say it was close but they thought Charlie had won it.

"Charlie is heartbroken now. "He has to wait until the European Championships next April to get his place for the Olympics now."
