Croydon Harriers and South London Harriers both enjoyed golden success - all in the 200m - at the South of England Indoor championships at Lee Valley last weekend, write Matthew Kiernan and John Foss.

Croydon's Ashleigh Clarke took the spoils in the U15 girls' standings with a 26.01 second clocking, the fastest time in the UK this year for her age group, while Twinelle Hopeson won the senior women’s 200m in 24.76, the fourth fastest time in the country.

For South London Harriers, it was Creston Harrison who shone the brightest, winning the U15 men's 200m in 23.51 putting him top of the this year's UK U15 rankings.

Croydon Harriers also won three silvers in the 60m sprint hurdles through Kertis Beswick (U17 men), Shirin Irving (U17 women) and Joe Yarde (U20 men), and four bronze medals thanks to Eleanor Smith-Hahn (U17 women, 200m), Cameron Smith (U20 men, 60m) and two for Marcelle Rowe (U15 boys, 200m and 400m).

Both clubs also enjoyed success at the Surrey Schools Cross Country Championships at Priory Park, Reigate, on Saturday.

Top of the pile was in-form South London Harrier Tom Holden, who continuing his impressive season by winning the intermediate boys' race.

Despite being in the youngest age group of the event, the 17-year-old crossed the line in 18 minutes, 23 seconds for victory.

His club-mate Steph McCall was fifth in the senior girls' race with William Bardsley fifth in the junior boys and Amy and Tessa Billups 20th and 21st in the intermediate girls' race.

Croydon Harriers claimed two individual medals as Peter Chambers struck silver in the show-piece senior boy’s event, clocking 23:07 for the undulating 6.5km course.

Mark Plackett was fourth in the same event in 23:36 with Dom Nolan fifth in 23:47 and all three have now booked their places to represent Surrey at the English Schools championships in Somerset in March.

The club’s other medal came courtesy of Holly Haile who grabbed bronze in the hotly contested intermediate girl’s race.

Stevie Lawrence also put herself in the frame to join her training partner at the English Schools after finishing eighth in the same race in the 69-strong field.

Josh Haasz and Patrick Lucas were 11th and 12th in the intermediate boys with Charlie Brackenborough 11th in the junior boys.
