Wimbledon's Toby Penty has set his sights on upsetting some of the big guns at next week’s English National Badminton Championships as he bids to force his way in to the GB set up.

At 19, Penty is one of the up-and-coming stars of British badminton and has underlined his talent with back-to-back quarter final appearances at the past two domestic championships.

This time around, Penty is determined to go at least one stage further with the prospect of a full-time invite to train alongside the like of four-time and defending champion Rajiv Ouseph at the National Badminton Centre in Milton Keynes.

And while Penty is on the radar of the decision makers in the sport, he knows upsetting someone like Ouseph - who knocked him out in 2011 - would put the cat firmly among the pigeons.

“I am really hoping that I can do well at the nationals this year,” he said.

“I have got to the quarter finals in the last two years and so it would be nice to maybe go one better and get into the semis, “My aim in the sport is to be up at the national training centre in Milton Keynes full time and the national championships are a great opportunity to show the coaches how much I have improved.

“I feel like I have improved a lot this year and learned a lot by being up at Milton Keynes and playing against the best singles players in the country.

“It would be great to be up there full time and it would also be good to give some of the best players in the country like Ouseph a good game at the nationals.

“Obviously, Ouseph will be the one to beat and hopefully I can put some pressure on people like him.

“The National Championships are the biggest event of the season for me and it is one that I am targeting and hoping to do well at.”

Following hot on the heels of the National Championships is the Yonex All England Open where some of the best players in the world will lock horns for crucial London 2012 qualification points.

And while Penty is unlikely to feature, he admits he will be glued to the action as he plots his route to the top of the sport in the years to come.

“I would love to go to the All England Open and play there but I think that will be something I have to look to try and get to in the next few years,” he added.

“I have always been to watch that when I was younger so it would be great to get there one day.”
