Richmond director of rugby Geoff Richards is hoping some anger management sessions with skipper Henry Head will tighten up his side’s discipline for the rest of the season.

Second-row Head was sent off in Saturday’s 40-19 triumph over Westcombe Park after receiving a second yellow card for retaliation, to add to the sin-binning he suffered on the opening day of the season at Dings Crusaders.

The former Ulster man has now been sin-binned twice and sent-off once in six appearances this season, picking up a one week club-imposed suspension for his latest transgression.

Richmond conceded eight second-half penalties on Saturday compared to just three in the opening 40 minutes and Richards believes it is a problem they must nip in the bud.

“Henry is very conscious and aware of his personality. We’ve had a long chat about it and come with some pointers that will help him with his captaincy and rapport with the referee,” he said.

“He was a bit unfortunate at the weekend in that the first yellow card was for a succession of penalties conceded by the team. The second was unacceptable.

“It will be dealt with by an RFU disciplinary hearing, but we felt we had to do something about it and a week-long ban is probably appropriate in the circumstances.

“Our discipline has been disappointing and is something we need to tighten up on.”

Richmond were 33-0 up at half-time through tries from Andy Saunders, Tom George, Tristan Wesley, Luke Cousins, Jono Farmer, before Neil Piggott rounded off the scoring in the second-half.

And Richards, who will be without Head, fellow lock Farmer and Alastair Simmie (knee) for Saturday’s trip to third-placed Clifton, felt the first half showing was as good as he has seen from his men this season.

“There was a lot of intent and control. We talked about controlling the ball before the game, but not at the expense of losing some of our attacking flair and we showed what can be achieved,” he added.

Richmond’s next three games: Oct 31 Clifton (a), Nov 7 Barnes (late kick-off, h), 28 Shelford (a).
