Esher new boy Gareth Morgan has revealed an hour with head coach Ollie Smith was all it took to convince him his future lay at Molesey Road, writes Muhammed Sher.

Welshman Morgan became the club’s first new signing for the forthcoming National Division One campaign and arrives following the recent departure of fly half Mark Atkinson to Bedford Blues and Fijian star Nicky Little’s retirement.

A host of current Esher stars have committed to the club recent weeks, but Morgan is the first new arrival of Smith’s reign.

The 27-year-old arrives at the club from Welsh Premiership side Carmarthen Quins having enjoyed spells with Worcester Warriors, London Welsh, the University of Queensland and Japanese club Canon.

And he admitted new boss Smith convinced him Esher were his perfect match.

“Although I am working full time, I was still looking to play at the highest level possible on a part-time basis. Esher fits perfectly into that category and it gives me the opportunity to lay down some roots in London,” said Morgan.

“I played against Esher a few years ago while at Welsh and was very impressed.

“Just spending an hour discussing things with Ollie made it a very easy decision to commit to his vision.

“I want to play in a team that plays the game in an entertaining way and I think that will be the case here. From what I have seen so far, Esher are capable of an immediate return to the Championship.”

Smith added: “We have a clear vision as to where we are going and how we will get there.

“The key part of that is having the right sort of player. Gareth is an astute lad and he will be one of our leaders in a key position.”
