Kingston chairman Graeme Maisey is hoping one last hurrah can save the club from Surrey Division One relegation today.

Kingston beat Battersea Ironsides 22-18 at Hook Road on Saturday to leave a trip to  East Molesey-based champions Old Tiffinians standing between them and survival .

Head coach Earle Wilkes men, rock-bottom at the turn of the year, have won five and drawn one of their eight games in 2014 with last Saturday’s  triumph their fourth in a row.

Seventh-placed Kingston are only three points above bottom-club Old Walcountians, with league restructuring threatening to see the bottom four of the 10 team division relegated.

And Maisey, who is considering calling time on his playing career in the summer, knows a win is key to their hopes.

“We have a habit of doing this. We don’t usually leave it this late. I just hope we haven’t left it too late,” said the 41-year-old second row, pictured left.

“With our best players fit we know we can beat anyone, so we are confident.

“I’ve played at Kingston for 10 years and I’ve never known the league to be this tight.”

Wilkes  added: “We’ve beaten the second, third and fourth placed teams in recent weeks, so we are more than capable of winning.

“We have to work hard enough to stay in the game  and  hope they do not fancy being involved in a dog fight with the league won already.

“The league table is  bizarre. If we win we could finish fourth. But if we lose we could go down.”
