Surrey have signed 26-year-old Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh, left, for the rest of the season as cover for Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood, who is expected to feature in his country's Twenty20 World Cup campaign in August.
"We feel that a world-class spinner is an important part of improving performance in the second half of the year," added Butcher.
"Azhar has made a great contribution to the club, and it's clear that international duty is a distinct possibility for him later this year, so we want to be prepared."
