Schoolchildren are planting 440 crosses to remember Epsom men killed in the First World War to mark its 100th anniversary.

Pupils from St Clement’s Catholic Primary School in West Ewell today planted the first 40 crosses in a field of remembrance at Bourne Hall Park.

Museum assistant David Brooks said: "There are 440 men listed on public war memorials in Epsom and Ewell.

"We will have one planted for everyone who died and they will be written on by local schoolchildren. They are going in a field of remembrance at Bourne Hall."

From today members of the public can also plant their own crosses there to remember those killed in the war.

Clive Gilbert, who attended the ceremony, said that the Mayor of Epsom and museum curator Jeremy Harte gave speeches. He said: "It was very good, very moving."

He said there is one woman among the 440 people listed on Epsom and Ewell's war memorials.

The crosses will remain in place for a least a month before being buried.
