CLUBSODA WORKSHOPS AT THE CROYDON CLOCKTOWER

In March social inclusion group Club Soda hosted a series of creative workshops at the Croydon Clocktower.

The workshops, which took place every Monday evening from 6 - 8 pm, covered theatre, music, film and art. The theatre workshop was run in association with the Big White Light Theatre Company. Club Soda events are produced and and run by people with learning disabilities. Their aim is to produce exciting arts events that appeal to a wide audience. They give opportunities to emerging artists with learning disabilities to present and develop their work.

The Big White Light Theatre Company are the resident theatre company of Club Soda, based at Croydon Clocktower. They have been working together since 2006 to produce their own unique style of theatre, which they regularly perform for organisations that are improving society for people with learning disabilities.

The first hour consisted of warm up games such as name learning games and word association, while the second hour dealt with improvisation such as games like 'voices in my head', which literally does what it says on the tin, someone narrates, while another person acts out what is being narrated.

Having performed in amateur theatre for a few years myself, I was glad, not only to find out about the workshops towards the end of last year, but that they were going ahead, despite the funding cuts at the Croydon Clocktower. The whole thing felt like being a child again, but in a good way; once you've left school and university, there aren't that many oppurtunities to use your imagination again.
