I was sorry to see that your correspondent Jessica Swann has had some bad experiences with trams.

Although it does not serve my immediate locality, I have used Tramlink a good deal since it started in May 2000, it being particularly useful for cross suburban trips to the likes of Beckenham, Bromley (partly by train) and Wimbledon.

I have not found antisocial behaviour to be a major problem nor any worse than on other forms of transport.

I do think, however, that it would make sense for the trams to take over the whole line

between Crystal Palace and Beckenham Junction, which would enable a service from Croydon to the former and dual directional running throughout.

The train service from Birkbeck to London is very indirect, and there are numerous other trains from Beckenham.

Earlier this year I visited Manchester’s tram system and was amazed at the scale of expansion since I last saw it 12 years ago, making it the UK’s largest urban metro. A pity Transport for London has not got on and done the same.
