I commend the efforts of Croydon Council to reduce the number of car crashes on its road by reducing the speed limit to 20mph.

In principal this is both admirable and sensible – the onus of ensuring everyone is safe to use our roads should be placed on the users who have the most chance of inflicting injury on others – ie, those in cars, vans and lorries.

For the drivers out there who moan that this is too slow, travel will take them ages, etc – the lost time travelling at 20mph as opposed to 30mph will be negligible unless you are planning a very long journey – minutes rather than hours – and if this means keeping people safe then surely this is a worthwhile sacrifice?

The one problem I have with the move is I wonder just how enforcible it is?

Even now thousands of people drive along residential roads faster than 30mph, while anyone who uses the motorways will know the 70mph speed limit is probably the most flouted law in the land.

Hopefully most people will see reason and lower their speed – and even for those who continue to speed, we can but hope that over time, their speeding will now be 28mph rather than 38mph.
