I am in favour of improvements to the tram in Croydon, but I must express concern at the recent consultation into a loop in Dingwall Road, the results of which were recently emailed to me.

I fear the preferred, first, option for the £17m loop will serve only the benefits of the Westfield developers, and will become a tram to nowhere – sending trams round to little used stops on the back streets of East Croydon at the cost of reducing services through the town centre, as existing tramlines will need to be diverted on to the new line to provide any kind of service.

Will passengers from Beckenham Junction or Elmers End really want to lose their direct services to George Street and West Croydon just so trams can park up on Dingwall Road to “regulate the service”?

Unfortunately the consultation felt biased towards the first option, even blatantly stating that it was the developer’s preferred option, so it is not surprising that this option was selected, but it has to be noted that a significant proportion of people who replied to the consultation selected other options, which offer better flexibility and service patterns, as well as potential for future improvement.

I hope level heads will prevail and the folly of this huge expense for what is effectively little more than a tram siding will be reconsidered.
