Mayor of London Boris Johnson has announced plans to allow motorcycles in red route bus lanes for an 18-month trial period, starting on January 5, 2009.
However, I am concerned that unless all the London boroughs join in, there is potential for confusion among road users about which bus lanes motorcyclists can use.
Motorcyclists can currently use bus lanes in Westminster, Kingston and Richmond, as well as some bus lanes along the A41, A23 and A13. I believe this sends a mixed message to London road users.
I am concerned that there are safety implications as motorcyclists may spend too much time checking the bus lane signage to avoid penalties.
Many motorcyclists using London roads frequently cross through a number of boroughs and, as some of the most vulnerable road users, cannot afford to be unnecessarily distracted.
Bus drivers, too, need to know when they should be paying more attention in looking out for motorbikes.
I have written to London councils to ask that all 32 boroughs consider joining the pilot to give motorcyclists the freedom to use all bus lanes across London.
