Malcolm Wicks should remember the 7/7 attacks when he is next asked to vote

Having just read MP Malcolm Wicks' letter (Croydon Guardian, July 13), may I take this opportunity to echo his sentiments in the aftermath of the appalling events on July 7.

Mr Wicks cites three challenges that we must face together, namely, winning the war on terror, unity and the need for communities to confront those who seek to divide us.

I would, however, suggest that he delete the first challenge because quite simply, how can you have a war on an emotion?

Of course we must ensure that the security services are properly funded, but rhetoric such as war on terror' is used to justify the erosion of our civil liberties.

In view of the events on July 7, may I instead issue a challenge to Mr Wicks?

While one cannot directly link the UK's involvement in the war on Iraq and the suicide bombings, Mr Wicks must weigh up all the potential repercussions whenever he decides to vote in favour of war again.

It is important to remember that the pre-war report by the joint intelligence committee indicated that the threat from al-Qa'eda would be heightened by deposing Saddam Hussein.
