A team of cadets from 97 (Croydon) Squadron Air Training Corps (ATC) has taken part in the national banner drill competition for the second year running. Held at RAF Halton the competition tests the top six teams from across the United Kingdom to find the best banner party in the ATC.

A banner is a significant part of a Squadron's identity (like an Army regiment's standard or colour) and is often paraded at ceremonial events. The banner party consists of five people and is responsible for the safe keeping of the banner at all times.

97 (Croydon) Squadron has a strong history in the competition having won the county and regional levels three years in a row.

The national competition is judged by drill instructors from the RAF Regiment, looking at the smallest detail in uniform and drill standard. The team performed a faultless display but just missed out on the trophy.

After such a strong result the team will be responsible for parading the ATC and regional banners at ceremonial events throughout 2013.

The ATC recruits between the ages of 13 and 17 and also offers uniformed and civilian staff roles. If you are interested in joining or want to find out more, you can contact the Squadron at 97@aircadets.org.
