Whitgift School holds charity day

6:06pm Wednesday 30th December 2009

On the 16th December 2009, Whitgift School will be holding their annual charity day, raising money for Topologo AIDs hospice, a charity providing a community centred HIV/AIDs program to villages in South Africa, and for SOS children’s villages, the world’s largest charity supporting orphaned children. The day comprises of various sponsored student-based activities and light-hearted amusements, with all proceeds going to charity. Events for the day will include movies, chess tournaments, Rubik’s cube marathons, games console contests and an iron man contest, as well as traditional sporting events such as football. In the evening, Whitgift Charity Concert will provide an opportunity for young talents to showcase their gifts to the wider public, and promises to be highly entertaining. Acts include Bhangra dancers, solo singing, break dancers and even a rendition of the theme tune of the children’s television show ‘Arthur’!

Speaking to one of the performers, Daniel Mathews, who is singing a self-composed song with piano accompaniment, he told me ‘I’m really looking forward to the show. There’s a great atmosphere already – although I’m slightly nervous about performing in front of so many people!’. The day offers a great opportunity for the local community to be involved in Whitgift life, and gives students a welcome break from their studies!
