In March, Gill Upton the Editor of a Business Travel magazine visited William Morris Sixth Form. This visit was to inspire and educate the young reporters of The Guardian about journalism. Gill Upton had run a workshop for the students of William Morris Sixth Form to mimic the writing styles of professional journalists.
Over a series of activities and conversations, the factors needed for better blogging were clear. Gill Upton had said it was essential to "Draw your reader in". The young reporters understood the basics well, and were intrigued to listen about how to improve their writing skills. As some of the young reporters who attended to the workshop do AS English Literature and Language, most of what was learnt was already practiced.
Students learnt that feature articles were "opinionated" and "descriptive". The young reporters were taught the difference between news articles and features. One student had said "this workshop was needed, I understand what journalism is now and how to improve my writing".
As the Young Reporter Scheme is coming to an end, deadlines and improvement in blogging are essential. Students know the difference between such articles and can write as a professional journalist.
The experience and journey throughout this Young Reporter programme is well appreciated.
