Walking down the local high street, I look around and I see peace. A few teenagers giggling together, mature couples holding hands with the smile of love shining across their faces, the odd screaming child with their parents… I look and I think, “Imagine if this was Ferguson…” Frankly, I can’t imagine how destroyed my hometown could be if riots came upon it. Albeit, this is a fairly old topic in the world news as of September, but it is still something to talk about. Especially since a memorial for the original victim (whose death sparked the riots) was burnt down just a few days ago and sparked another swarm of riots amongst some civilians. Ferguson is anarchy. That is it, and yet somehow parts of the world are either pretending it’s not occurring, or they are instead desperately trying to save this intimate town located in the state of Missouri. If you have not heard, the riots that occurred in Ferguson are because on August 9th this year, an African-American by the name of Michael (Mike) Brown (aged 18 at time of death) was shot unprovoked by a white police officer, Darren Wilson (24). Mike Brown was unarmed and not resisting arrest at the time preceding the shooting, with his arms up and stating "I don't have a gun. Stop shooting!" He was shot whilst surrendering to the officer in question whilst turned facing the shooter, as has been evidenced and proven to be true by famous forensic pathologist, Michael Baden (famous for his testimony at the O.J. Simpson trial, 1994), upon his examination of Brown’s body. Then Brown’s body was left in the middle of the street for 4 hours without being moved whilst police surrounded the body. What was a small factor in the riots was the fact that the Ferguson police department gave Wilson paid, administrative lead despite clear evidence that he had done it. A major factor is that upon news of the shooting, Ferguson police forced out media personnel and ordered a ban on any media paraphernalia regarding the riots from all civilians. The hot topic as of August was the police brutality that occurred during the riots. Type ‘Ferguson’ into Google, and over 14 million hits turn up. Yet the first hundred pages are not of pride for the town; it is contempt, disgust and criticism of the Ferguson police force and their choices of how to handle the residents. Dogs being set on people, terrorizing peaceful citizens by attempting to run them over and hurling tear gas towards them, and even shooting citizens point-blank in the face and/or body in front of horrified crowds with rubber bullets. These are the very people who were chosen specifically to uphold the law and not harm the innocent. Is it not ironic that they are told to “serve and protect” citizens and, instead, do the complete opposite to those holding very peaceful protests? Many officers have still been seen wearing wristbands depicting the words “I am Darren Wilson” in bold white letters whilst on the job, in support of Wilson and his actions. There has also been a Kickstarter campaign set up for Wilson, for expenses despite the fact he is on paid leave, and had reached over $235,000 dollars before it was subsequently taken down. This has ignited severe criticism from Ferguson and a majority of the world as Brown’s family also set up a fund and had raised $100,000 as of August 20th (this has now raised to over $330,000 due to incredible funding from supporters of Brown’s family from all over the world). The town is in disarray. It is sheer anarchy still, even over a month after the shooting which sparked a rebellion against the law, and a fight for justice and Mike Brown’s innocence on the matter; the justice of a trial for Darren Wilson to be found guilty of murder (that has still not happened) and for the police to see that brutal force is not ok, that it has consequences. Still the consequences for those policemen and women have not been doled out, despite video and photographic evidence showing their faces, badge numbers and names. Luckily as September rolled towards an end, Wilson was seen finally getting his comeuppance as a trial before a grand jury was in effect. In my opinion, I hope that karma comes back to bite him for his disgusting actions upon a defenseless boy, which caused a two week anarchic and pain-filled fight for justice. Whilst some may object to my choice of punishment to Wilson, I believe the lethal injection should be brought back in for this repulsive crime. Perhaps he should resolve his injustice by going out the way Brown had to suffer? The way Brown’s family and friends have suffered due to this man’s racially motivated actions can never be given enough apologies for. I say: let the man suffer for his devious actions.
