As a student, I often find myself sitting in the study room with no motivation to complete the mountains of work in front of me. The first thought is music. Of course, music may not help all students; it may distract them from their work and cause disruption to those around them. Scientists have had many a discussion on this topic and have several ideas.

After asking other students what they listen to, I discovered that the majority of students listen to music, though many listen to upbeat songs with lyrics. As a minority, listening to music with no lyrics and a slower beat is actually proven to be better as well as more relaxing.

One student said “Music helps to keep me concentrated and not look at other people around me”; this proves that a soothing beat may be helpful towards some students as they are not tempted to listen to conversations around them and to focus on their own work. An opposing student commented “I can hear other people’s music and it really annoys me!” This shows that we should all be considerate when listening to music and to keep it on a low volume!

As a personal tip, I would recommend listening to music without words that has a slow and melodic rhythm as this has been scientifically proven to keep your brain more focused and songs with vocals are said to “impair your intake of information”. So when sitting in the study room, I like to keep my music quiet and not distracting, I just hope my classmates will start to think along the same lines!
