No More Proms for Preston

For Therfield Secondary School, it was only the 19th June that the Year 11’s celebrated their departure of Secondary education at Preston Cross Hotel in Bookham. Throughout the spectacular night, many mentioned of how amazing the venue was, after the original venue was changed due to Christmas Floods last year. However this was not an issue for the Prom goers, the established hotel was the adequate setting for the end of year celebrations. It is not only Proms that are a hit with the hotel, many weddings and events are held at the Rectory Lane location that have been prolonged successes with the clients they have assembled.

All buildings would be demolished with the exception of the original late-19th century house on three sides and a flint outbuilding for conversion into a close care unit. The plans include the creation of associated access, landscaping, a new footpath and a sensory garden.

Despite the events that are booked throughout the year, it was announced that permission has been granted to renovate the time honoured hotel into a Residential care home for the elderly. Developers have been given the go ahead to turn the building into a 70 bedroom nursing home with associated close- care apartments by Mole Valley’s District Council. It is said that one of the main reasons for this is due to the huge demand for additional housing for the elderly in Mole Valley; also the employment will be generated from the proposal. Regardless of some of the beneficial factors, many residents have been surprised of some of the actions that the council have put in place. Emma Rogers from Bookham commented by saying ‘My fiancé and I, are due to get married within the next few years, we were hoping to book Preston Cross Hotel however it looks like this is out of the cards for us’. It has seem to be that it has been great disappointment for the removal of the memory filled location, however a large degree of happiness has been expressed for the additional homes that will be distributed throughout Surrey.
