The 14-year-old told police she was walking in Longheath Gardens, close to Long Lane, at about 11.30am today when she was approached by the man.

He tried to pull her into her car but she managed to escape unharmed.

The girl was left "shaken up but OK", her mother said on Facebook.

Officers are investigating the report of the attempted abduction and have stepped up patrols in the area, a Metropolitan Police spokesman said.
