A Crystal Palace man is going the extra mile to kickstart the new year by travelling to the Caribbean to help people recover from Hurricane Irma.

The hurricane left the British Virgin Islands in ruins when it struck in September 2017. 

Roger Carter, 43, told News Shopper: "I lived and taught on the island of Tortola a few years ago. It was an amazing place. The people were beautiful. I left in 2006 but always missed the British Virgin Islands and it has always had a special place in my heart. I have many many friends still there.

"So when I saw the absolute devastation caused by Hurricane Irma, wondering for days if friends were alive, seeing the destruction of an entire nation, I had to do something."

He decided to take part in a 70 mile charity walk around the British Virgin Islands, which takes place today (January 2). 

Roger - who lived in Tortola from 2002 to 2006 - explained why he will walk around the main islands of the Caribbean. 

"I wanted to walk around the islands to see friends and meet people and thought I should then try and raise some funds," he said. 

"Many visited me here and the have fond memories. I hope they can give a little donation. 

"I have friends who will not have power for months. Friends who are homeless. Friends without jobs. Its tough, real tough. But the spirit and determination of the people is good. There is around $4 billion worth of damage for an island of 28,000 people."

He said his family back home are proud of his desire to help others. 

Roger grew up in Mottingham, went to school in Eltham College and is a big fan of Charlton Athletic.
