A motorcycle rider who mounted the pavement multiple times while leading police on a chase through South Norwood has been arrested.
Yesterday morning, a Met officer was carrying out routine checks in South Norwood when his suspicions were aroused by a particular scooter’s condition.
He signalled for the rider to pull over to check his driving documents, at which point the rider sped off.
The officer gave chase and called for the support of a helicopter and a few more police.
The rider continued through Norwood, frequently mounting footpaths.
At this point the helicopter took over the pursuit and the officer on the ground stopped his pursuit.
The rider turned into Rothschild Street where he rode into a van coming from the other direction and received minor injuries.
He abandoned his scooter and continued on foot into an industrial estate, all the while being monitored by the police helicopter.
Local officers, directed by the helicopter, cornered and detained the suspect. He was arrested on suspicion of taking and driving away; failing to stop; and dangerous driving.
The vehicle, his outer clothing and helmet have been seized for investigative purposes.
